Gearing up for T-Day
I’ve never been much of a fan of Thanksgiving. I’m vegetarian now, which means the holiday is even less special to me, but even when I ate meat it was never a favorite holiday. Not even in my Top 5. Maybe not even in my Top 10. The biggies for me in the latter part of the year have always been Halloween, Christmas/Yule, and to a lesser extent New Year’s Eve/Day. Thanksgiving has always been kind of…meh. Oh yay, let’s slave away in a hot kitchen, watch football on tv all day, graze on food for hours, and then clean everything up. Not so much. Now that I don’t eat meat, including turkey or anything with turkey/chicken stock in it, the holiday is even less relevant for me. What’s a girl to do when the rest of the country is obsessed? Looking at vintage or vintage-y photos related to the holiday don’t hurt.
Major winter project: Kitchen!
After discussing it a bit, I think Kevin and I have decided that we’re going to try to tackle as much of the kitchen redesign/renovation over the winter as we can.
I know what you’re thinking.
“Wait wait wait, the kitchen? It’s usable! What about finishing the bathroom? What about working on the lounge area in the basement? What about what about what about?!”
We’re both pretty sick of the kitchen, and if we’re going to be trapped inside over the winter, the season during which we do our most labor-intensive and creative work at the stove, we’d might as well be in a room that we like to look at and use, am I right? I think I am.
Anyway, before I get to a few inspirational photos that I’ve collected lately, I want to ask you readers a couple of questions:
- What is your favorite thing about your kitchen?
- What do you wish you had in your kitchen?
On with the pictures:
Kitchen collection
We have so many projects going on, people. No joke. Actually, we’re only ever involved with one project at a time (obviously, home renovations aren’t really good venues for multitasking), but we’ve got so many backburners that it’s getting out of control. To be honest, we might have developed a little bit of house ADD, since we keep starting projects and almost finishing them, and then leaving them to languish. Like the bathroom. Oops.
Anyway, one of the projects we’ve got waiting in the wings is the kitchen. We’ve been smart about this room, though, and we’ve decided not to even start on it until we have all of the pieces we’ll need to finish it collected or purchased, so we can do it all in one go. It’s such an important room of the house that we can’t afford to lose use of it for longer than it’ll take to do the work. In the meantime, Kevin’s workshop has slowly been filled with bits and pieces that we’ll incorporate into the room. Want to see what we’ve got so far?

This is the sink cabinet that we picked up for free from the owner of the stove below. Metal cabinets with a sink in great condition.

Check out this fabulous original Chambers stove! It's in great condition, and I can't wait to see it installed in my house.

Remember these guys that we picked up over the winter? Original Youngstown Mullins kitchen cabinets from the 50s. We'll paint them all white and put on matching hardware.
Things left to collect for full kitchen assembly:
black and white checkered ceramic tile flooring
Formica laminate countertops referenced here
Dishmaster kitchen faucet referenced in the same post
Lots that I’m forgetting
